Digital Design Assignment 3: Movie Poster

For this assignment we had to design a movie poster. We could either do it by photo montage or illustrate it

We had 3 scenario's but we were allowed to bend these scenario's anyway we wanted

I chose scenario 2 which was: "quoted from assignment brief"

YOU come from a poor family and spend most of your time dreaming. On one such occasion you run into an old shop  where the old proprietor reveals an ancient story-book to you. Shortly after, you open up the book and begin to read it; you're then drawn into the mythical land of fantasia

Picture Research!

It might not be related to the topic but these pictures sparked something in me

 "Music Kills"

Some songs are just a killer aren't they?

Stand undefeated and stare down your enemy
Close your eyes and let the butterflies take you away to a better place away from the sorrow and pain
Maybe there is a time to give up when the weight of the wings are too much to handle
I will not be controlled anymore! I will break away from your strings!

 Are you drowning?
 Perfect balance

Let the mystic and the cryptic unfold

 What have you found?

The lighting and the shadows mixed with the intensity of the pose really brings out the picture
Don't speak, 'they' can hear you

Poster format research!!

Time to start sketching and brainstorming!

After a lot of time thinking here is a sketch I came up with:

A girl with a scar across her face and the world of fantasy exhibited in her hair

The concept. She comes from a poor family, he hates reality and gets drunk on fantasy. The scar represents her outer pain but the world of fantasy represents her salvation.

When I showed this to my lecturer he wanted more detail of the fantasy world being portrayed in her hair so this is what I came up with:

Now that my design got approved it was time to bring it to Photoshop!

Here are some screenshots:
I started with the skin and just began blending everything (I wasn't paying much attention to the coloring and detail)

At this point I just gave up and wanted to REDO the entire thing

This was my first attempt at Photoshopping the image. I know what you're thinking SHE LOOKS TERRIBLE welothwioehgiopwhreiphegioetjop4jpreth

In my defense I did it when I was exhausted @-@

Here is the progress of the REAL final  =D
This time I started with the eyes

I changed the blending more to intensify the blue of the eyes.
Instead of starting with the skin or any part of the face I continued with the lips
After I made sure the eyes and lips were okay, only then I started with the basic face shape

When I was happy with the shading I started with the scar

Once the scar looked real enough I tried to make the skin surrounded the scar look inflamed and swollen

The fantasy world would be reflected in her hair

This was my whole progress before I came up with my first prototype (Which was rejected)

New concept of the story:

Lucy is a girl living on the streets, she is scarred by reality and wants everything to change, she stumbles upon an old book shop one day. The proprietors shows her an ancient storybook. She reads about the fairy-tales that dwell inside and gets drunk on fantasy. She opens her eyes to find herself in a new world, a world where everything's beautiful and mystical. There are dragons flying in the skies and crystals everywhere. The whole world was the pinnacle of beauty. But in reality she was found dead outside the shop- she was so indulged in the book that when she left the shop she forgot to look both ways before crossing the street.

This movie has everything to do with the psychological mindset.

Anyway after showing this to the lecturers. There were a couple of things they wanted me to change:
1. The font
2. The "exclusion" effect I had used on her right eye
3. The lighting (wanted more light and shadows)

Mr Jeffrey also mentioned it looked more like fanart than a movie poster! I HAD to change it

After a few hours this was the outcome of my hard work

This is my FINAL!

Final edit of the whole storyline and concept

Storyline:
Lucy is a girl living in a world of poverty, she finds herself most of the time daydreaming. She is very much drunk on fantasy. One day while going home from school she spots an old bookshop across the street, one she had never seen before. She runs across the street and goes inside. The shop keeper hands her an old book as she entered. It’s filled with fairytales of all sorts. She is intrigued and keeps reading, she soon finds herself inside the world of fantasy. Dragons are flying around her and beautiful shimmering crystals spread across the field of miles. The whole world was beautiful. She never wanted to leave. But in reality, when she ran across the street to go to the bookshop she got hit by car and died instantly.

Concept:
The whole theme here is eerie fantasy.  Lucy stands before the camera with a big visible scar on her face, it represents the poverty in her life whereas the realm of fantasy in her hair represents her salvation.
