Illustration Assigment 3: State of Mind RESEARCH

For this assignment we were supposed to choose a mental condition and a direct opposite of that condition and do some story boarding along with it. We were also supposed to include an animatic (Done in Adobe Premiere Pro)

After looking  at the list of Psychological States, I found the following quite interesting:

  • Antisocial
  • Nervous/ High strung
  • Dangerous
  • Sad
  • Insecure
  • Dysphoria
  • Secretive
  • Enthrallment
But the Three I was stuck between were Sad, Dysphoria and Enthrallment

Dysphoria

A mental and emotional condition in which a person experiences intense feelings of depression, discontent and indifference to the world around them.

Mood disorders can induce dysphoria with a heightened risk of suicide, especially people with bipolar disorder who are in a depressive phase. Experienced in response to ordinary life events such as great illness or grief.

Basically: Restlessness, Dissatisfaction and anguish

It is different from the typical sadness because it often includes a kind of jumpiness and some anger.
Might have experienced it coming down from a stimulant (eg: Chocolate or coffee)

This psychological state is basically in response to distressing situations, extreme boredom and depression.

Sadness

This is quite straightforward. I'm pretty sure almost everyone knows what Sadness is. It is basically emotional pain associated with feelings of disadvantage, loss, despair, helplessness, sorrow and rage. Usually negative feelings.

A sad person is usually unresponsive, less outspoken, less energetic and emotional. [Crying is an obvious indication]

From the research I gathered Dysphoria is basically a very ENHANCED feeling of sadness.

Here are some research pictures:

After looking at all this pictures, I came up with a variety of 'strokes' that would represent this negative state (both Dysphoria and Sadness)

(Sorry for the blurry-ness )

Enthrallment

A subset of "joy". A state of intense rapture (Ecstatic, ecstasy ) it's not the same as love or lust.

Experience it when you see an incredible spectacle (A concert, a movie , a rocket taking off) captures all your attention and elevates your mood to tremendous heights.

Euphoria

(Opposite of Dysphoria)

It is the mental and emotional condition in which a person experiences intense feelings of well-being, elation, happiness, ecstasy, excitement and joy. An overwhelming sense of contentment. It can also be defined as an "Affective state of exaggerated well-being or elation" . Euphoria is considered to be an exaggerated PHYSICAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL state, sometimes induced by the use of PSYCHOACTIVE drugs. Euphoria  has also been cited during certain religious or spiritual rituals and MEDIATION.

Happiness

(Opposite of Sadness, DUH =~= )

This is also quite straight forward. Happiness is a mental/emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

After some research I did a few 'strokes' of my own:

 And this concludes the research.
